WICHITA, Kan. – Illinois State used a five-run sixth to defeat Wichita State 7-2 in game one of a three-game series.

Sam Hilliard went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a home run for the Shockers.

Starter Jeb Bargfeldt took the loss. He went 5.1 innings and gave up four earned runs on three hits with five walks and six strikeouts.

The Redbirds jumped out to an early lead with a run in the second. With one out, Jared Hendren doubled to left-center and moved to third on an error on a failed pickoff attempt. Sean Beesley grounded out to short to score Hendren and give the Redbirds a 1-0 lead.

ILS added to the lead in the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Ryan Koziol walked on four pitches to give the Redbirds a 2-0 lead. Beesley and Jean Ramirez then followed with two-run singles to increase the lead to 6-0.

With two outs in the sixth, Ryan Tinkham walked and Sam Hilliard homered to left field to cut the lead to 6-2.

The Redbirds answered with a run in the top of the seventh. Dwyer drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly for a 7-2 Redbird lead.

The Shockers and Redbirds play game two on Sat., April 11 at 2 p.m.
