Box Score CARBONDALE, Ill. – Wichita State used an eight-run fifth to defeat Southern Illinois 13-3 and sweep the three-game series.
Tanner Dearman and Gunnar Troutwine both went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Ryan Tinkham went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Starter Jeb Bargfeldt went five innings and gave up one unearned run on six hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
The Shockers jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first. Tanner Dearman led off with a walk and moved to second on a single from Mikel Mucha. Daniel Kihle was hit by a pitch to load the bases and with one out, Sam Hilliard singled through the right side to drive in Dearman and Mucha for a 2-0 lead.
The Salukis cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. Logan Blackfan led off with a double and with one out, Tyler Rolland reached on a bunt single and Blackfan scored on a Shocker throwing error to cut the lead to 2-1.
Jordan Farris doubled with one out in the fourth and scored on Gunnar Troutwine's single through the left side to put WSU up 3-1.
WSU broke the game open with eight runs in the fifth. Dearman led off with a single and moved to second after a walk to Mucha. With one out, Ryan Tinkham doubled off the left field wall to score Dearman and Hilliard reached on a catcher's interference to load the bases. Farris singled in Mucha and Chase Rader was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in another run. Troutwine followed with an RBI single and Tanner Kirk's two-run double made the score 9-1. Dearman finished the scoring with his second hit of the inning, a two-run single, to put the Shocks up 11-1.
SIU cut into the lead with two runs in the sixth. Jake Hand led off with a walk and moved to third on a one-out double from Taylor Martin. A wild pitch scored Hand and Martin scored on a groundout to make the score 11-3.
Mucha singled with one out in the eighth and he scored on Kihle's double to left-center. Tinkham singled to left-center to drive in Kihle and give the Shockers a 13-3 lead.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., March 24 at Oklahoma State at 6 p.m.
