BSB: Shocks Take Series Over SIU With 20-6 Win

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Wichita State used an eight-run fourth inning on its way to a 20-6 win over Southern Illinois in game two of a three-game series.

Tanner Kirk went 4-for-4 with four RBI and a home run, while Daniel Kihle went 3-for-5 with four RBI and a home run. Sam Hilliard went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two doubles.

Reliever John Hayes earned the win. He pitched 3.2 shutout innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Shockers used a two-out rally to score in the top of the first. With two outs, Daniel Kihle singled up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. Ryan Tinkham followed with a walk and Sam Hilliard singled to right-center to drive in Kihle. Tinkham came around to score on a Saluki error to give the Shocks a 2-0 lead.

The Salukis wasted no time in tying the game in the bottom of the first. Chase Slone led off with a double and scored on a Shocker fielding error to cut the lead to 2-1. With one out, Jake Hand singled through the right side to score Will Farmer and tie the game at two.

Chase Rader led off the second with a single through the left side and stole second with one out. Tanner Kirk hit his first career home run to left field to put the Shockers in front 4-2.

SIU took the lead with four runs in the third. The Salukis used three hits and two walks to take a 6-4 lead.

The Shockers answered with eight runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth to go in front 20-6.

The fourth inning was highlighted by a grand slam from Kihle. Tinkham and Hilliard doubled in the fifth and Hilliard and Gunnar Troutwine doubled in the sixth.

The Shockers and Salukis wrap up the series on Sun., March 22 at 1 p.m.
