BSB: Shocks Take Valley Opener Over SIU, 3-2

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Bob Arens' RBI double in the top of the ninth gave Wichita State a 3-2 win over Southern Illinois in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.

Starter Willie Schwanke went 7.2 innings and gave up one earned run on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Reliever Taylor Goshen earned the win after retiring all four batters he faced.

The Shockers got on the board in the top of the first. Tanner Dearman and Daniel Kihle led off the game with walks and Dearman moved to third on a throwing error. Kihle was caught in a run down between first and second and Dearman came home to score to put the Shocks up 1-0.

The Salukis answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Chase Slone and Will Farmer led off with infield singles and after fielder's choice from Greg Lambert, Jake Hand's infield single and Shocker throwing error led to two runs for the Salukis.

The Shockers used some help from the Salukis to tie it in the fourth. Taylor Sanagorski led off with a walk and moved to second on an error. Jordan Farris' sacrifice bunt moved him to third and he scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at two.

Farris led off the ninth on second base after a two-base throwing error. Mikel Mucha sacrificed him to third and he scored on Bob Arens' double down the left field line to give the Shocks a 3-2 lead.

The Shockers and Salukis play game two of the series on Sat., March 21 at 2 p.m.
