WBB: Shockers Fall at Cal, 78-66, Friday in NCAAs

BERKELEY, Calif.  --  Wichita State (29-5) lost at California, 78-66, Friday in the first round of the NCAA Tournament inside Haas Pavilion.

WSU senior Alex Harden scored a team-high 22 points to lead the Shockers, who shot 40.7 percent to Cal's 51.9 percent for the game. 

Harden completed her career as the most decorated player in Shocker history and the all-time leading scorer with 1,708 points. Jamillah Bonner and Kelsey Jacobs also completed their careers as the winningest two-year and three-year players, respectively, in Shocker history. 

All three contributed to the only three NCAA appearances, only three MVC regular-season championships and only three MVC Tournament championships in Shocker history.

Gray led four double-figure Bear scorers with 22 points as Cal will move on to face Texas on Sunday.

Cal out-scored WSU, 10-7 over the first five minutes of the second half to take a 47-34 lead into the media timeout at 15:16.  Dapprich opened with five points, including her first three-pointer of the game, and Jacobs had two potions for WSU.

WSU scored four-straight points on free throws, two by Harden and two by Dapprich to cut Cal's lead to nine, 47-38, at 14:02.

WSU continued to cut away at theCal lead, making a 6-0 run into a called timeout by Cal at 12:20 to trail by just four, 47-43.

Cal extended the lead back to 10 with a three-pointer by Jefflo at the 8:54 mark and Boyd made it a 12-point lead, 59-47, with a baseline drive for a layup at 8:12.

The Bears kept the lead steady and still held a 12 point lead, 68-56, at the 4:05 mark  after Harden scored her 22nd point on a jumper in the lane. 

Cal then went on an 8-2 run to take a 76-58 lead with 1:30 remaining before time ran out.

To open the game. the Shockers played Cal to a two point game, 12-10, in the first 7:27 of the game with Harden scoring six of the first 10 for WSU.

Cal's Boyd picked up her second foul at 11:23, but not before scoring eight of the Bears' first 12 points.

The Shockers battled, but Cal increased its lead to five three times over the next seven minutes but Harden's and Decker's three at 10:21 and 5:00, respectively, kept WSU's offense scoring.

Cal went on a 13-2 run to take a 37-26 lead at the 1:19 mark in the first half, and with neither team scoring, headed into the locker room with the 11-point lead.

Cal out-shot the Shockers, 51.6 percent to 39.2 percent for the half with Gray leading the Bears with 10 points and Harden leading WSU with 11 points.
