Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State used seven shutout hitless innings from Chris Mathewson to sweep Wichita State with a 4-0 win in game three.
Starter Sam Hilliard went 5.1 innings and gave up two earned runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
The Dirtbags jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. Garrett Hampson led off with a single and stole second. Eric Hutting reached on a sacrifice bunt and an error that advanced Hampson to third. After a flyout and a strikeout, Alex Bishop singled through the left side to score Hampson and give LBSU a 1-0 lead.
LBSU added to the lead in the fifth. Jonathan Serven reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. He moved to third on a base hit and scored on a safety squeeze from Hutting to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Dirtbags increased their lead with two runs in the sixth. Luke Rasmussen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and he scored on a double down the left field line from Daniel Jackson to make the score 3-0. Jackson then scored on a pinch-hit single from Zack Belanger to increase the lead to 4-0.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., March 6 when they host Central Michigan at 3 p.m.
