LONG BEACH, Calif. – Long Beach State scored three runs in the third and the seventh to beat Wichita State 7-0 in game one of a three-game series.

Starter Sam Tewes took the loss. He pitched six innings and gave up one earned run on five hits with no walks and a career-high eight strikeouts.

Sam Hilliard, Ryan Tinkham, Mikel Mucha and Taylor Sanagorski each had a hit for the Shockers.

The Dirtbags used Shocker miscues to score three runs in the third inning. Tristan Mercadel reached base with one out on a Shocker error and moved to second on a balk. LBSU added more runs in the seventh. With two outs, Domingues singled and stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Hampson for a 4-0 lead. Zack Rivera followed with a two-run home run to left field to increase the lead to 6-0.

The Dirtbags tacked on the final run in the eighth.

The Shockers and Dirtbags play game two of the series at 2 p.m. (CT) on Sat., Feb. 28.
