LAKEWOOD, Calif – Wichita State's softball team defeated Stanford, 6-4, but fell to UCLA 11-0 to split their Friday portion at the Long Beach State Louisville Slugger Tournament at the Mayfair Park.
Wichita State completes the Long Beach State Louisville Slugger Tournament when they face Utah Valley on Saturday at 9 a.m. in Fullerton, Calif.
Game 1—Wichita State 6, Stanford 4
Katie Malone (3-3) picked up the complete-game win. She gave up four runs (all earned) on ine hits, walked one and struck out four.
Haley Snyder (7-5) took the loss. She threw the final five innings, giving up five runs (none earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out two.
Liz Broyles and Melanie Jaegers each had two RBI while combining for just one hit. Mackenzie Wright had her first three-hit game of her career, as she went 3-4 with a run scored.
Cassandra Roulund went 1-3 with two RBI to lead the Cardinal.
Stanford began the bottom of the first with the bases loaded, and no outs after three consecutive hits. Malone struck out Jessica Plaza to get the first out, but Casandra Rouland put the Cardinal up 2-0 when she had a two-RBI single that scored Ashby and Wells. Rouland stole second to put runners on second and third with one out, but Malone forced a lineout and a strikeout to get out of the inning with only allowing two runs.
During the top of the second, the Shockers strung together two hits and a walk, all with two outs to force the bases loaded. Johnson then popped out to Hanna Winter to end the inning without the Shockers scoring any runs.
Wichita State threatened again in the top of the third with Cacy Williams on second and Kelli Spring on first with no outs. Brittany Fortner's groundout to Erin Ashley moved Williams and Spring up a base with one out, and Broyles at the plate. A Broyles groundout to Ashley produced the Shockers' first run of the game when Williams scored from third to cut the Cardinal lead to 2-1. Sorensen threw out Macklin Hitz just before she reached first on a grounder to keep the game at 2-1 through the top of the third.
The Shockers scored three runs on two hits in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Wright reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a throwing error by Sorenson, allowing Fortner to score. Moments later, Jaegers hit a two-RBI double to put the Shockers on top, scoring Wright and Broyles to put the Shockers up 4-2 after the top half of the fifth.
Stanford answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at four apiece. Wells tripled to left center, scoring Winter from first. Seconds later, Ashby grounded out to second, scoring wells to even the game after five innings.
Wichita State answered Stanford's two-run bottom of the fifth rally with two of their own to reclaim the lead at 6-4 after the top of the sixth. Fortner reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Johnson to give the Shockers the 5-4 lead. A sacrifice fly from Broyles scored Spring to push the Shocker lead to 6-4, which later became the final score.
Game 2—No. 14/13 UCLA 11, Wichita State 0 (Five Innings)
Katie Malone (3-4) took the loss. She went 1.2 innings and gave up eight runs (three earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out one.
Ally Carda (7-2) picked up the win. She pitched a three-hit shutout while walking one and striking out seven.
Cacy Williams, Kelli Spring and Liz Broyles recorded the only three hits for the Shockers. Brittany Moeai and Stephany LaRosa each had two RBI for the Bruins.
Wichita State began the game with two straight singles—by Williams, and Spring. The Shockers eventually advanced Williams to third and Spring to second, with one out and with Broyles at the plate. Both Broyles and Hitz struck out swinging to keep the game scoreless after the top half of the first.
UCLA scored five in the bottom of the first and four in the bottom of the second to take a 9-0 lead after two innings.
The Bruins scored two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 11-0 over the Shockers. Gracie Goulder scored after a Spring error allowed Carda to reach base, pushing their lead to 10-0. Two batters later, Stephany LaRosa singled and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Delaney Spaulding to push the Bruins' lead to the 11-0 final score in five innings.
