Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Darius Carter's double-double and a big second half from Fred VanVleet lifted No. 11 Wichita State to a 63-53 victory and spoiled Senior Night for Indiana State in front of 6,169 fans at the Hulman Center.
Carter hit 8-of-12 shots from the field on his way to a team-high 20 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds for the Shockers, who improved to 26-3 (16-1 Missouri Valley Conference).
It was the fourth double-double of the year for Carter and the fifth of his Shocker career.
VanVleet, scoreless at halftime, scored 15 second-half points to help WSU fend off an upset-minded ISU (14-15, 10-7 MVC).
After the Shockers scored the first nine points out of halftime to build a 37-24 lead with 16:32 to go,
ISU roared back to within a point at the 5:57 mark.
Khristian Smith led ISU with 20 points, including a flurry of eight-straight to help pull the Sycamores back up off the matt.
Clutch baskets from Carter and VanVleet helped stem the tide in the closing minutes. A 10-1 Shocker run moved the lead back out to double-digits and helped WSU lock up its seventh-straight win in Terre Haute – now the longest run of success there in school history.
WSU hit just 2-of-17 three-pointers but outshoot the Sycamores 40.3 percent to 34 percent overall from the field. The Shockers also won the battle of the boards, 40-33.
Tekele Cotton finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Evan Wessel collected three steals to go with seven points.
Gregg Marshall notched his 200th career win and became just the ninth coach in MVC history to win 100 conference games.
A win in Saturday's regular season finale would give the Shockers the outright MVC title for the third time in four years.
Tipoff against No. 10 Northern Iowa is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. CT on ESPN.
