Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sam Houston State scored four runs in the second inning on its way to a 9-3 win over Wichita State in game three of the series.
Ryan Tinkham and Chase Rader each went 2-for-4 for the Shockers, while Tanner Kirk went 2-for-3 with a double.
Starter Willie Schwanke took the loss. He went four innings and gave up six runs on seven hits.
In the bottom of the second inning, Spence Rahm led off with a hard hit single to left field and with one out, Dylan Ebbs walked and with two outs Collin Yelich was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ryan Farney drew a bases loaded walk to put the Bearkats up 1-0 and then Travis Lee, Colt Atwood and Hayden Simerly all had infield singles to drive in runs and put SHSU up 4-0.
The Shockers answered with a run in the third. Bob Arens led off with a single to left field and a double down the left field line by Tanner Kirk moved him to third. With one out, Jordan Farris hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Arens and cut the lead to 4-1.
SHSU added two more in the fourth. Jake MacWilliam led off the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a bunt single from Yelich. Farney followed with a bunt single and a Shocker throwing error to score MacWilliam for a 5-1 Bearkat lead. A groundout to first from Simerly drove in another run for a 6-1 score.
The Shockers cut into the lead in the seventh inning. Chase Rader led off with an infield single and moved to second on a Bearkat throwing error. Sam Hilliard doubled to left field to drive in Rader and pinch hitter Mikel Mucha doubled down the left field line to drive in Hilliard to cut the lead to 6-3.
The Bearkats added three more in the eighth for the final 9-3 score.
The Shockers are next in action on Tue., Feb. 17 at Oral Roberts at 3 p.m.
