Postgame InterviewWICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State broke a 29-year old school record with 44 free throw makes and tied its own, 63-year old Missouri Valley Conference record with 62 free throw attempts, on its way to a commanding, 98-69 win over Nevada, Tuesday night at Charles Koch Arena.

Four Shockers registered double-figure scoring games, and all 13 players that saw action scored, led by
Ron Baker's game-high 17 points. Baker went 4-for-7 from the field and a perfect 7-for-7 at the line, doing most of his damage in the second half.
Zach Brown led the free throw charge, hitting 11-of-12, and
Fred VanVleet went 10-for-12. Both players finished with 13 points, despite a combined four field goal attempts.
Shaquille Morris tallied 12 points, and
Anton Grady collected nine points and team-high seven boards.
WSU's 44 free throw makes were four more than the previous mark (first accomplished Dec. 11, 1967 against Arizona State, and later equaled in a double-overtime loss to Fordham on Dec. 6, 1986) and tied for the second-most ever by a Missouri Valley Conference team.
Before WSU's MVC record-tying effort on Tuesday night, no Valley team had topped even 60 attempts in nearly 62 years. Drake piled up 62 on Jan. 18, 1954, equaling the mark established by WSU one year prior on Jan. 16, 1953.
Only Sam Houston State (49-of-64 on Nov. 17 vs. St. Thomas (TX)) has recorded more free throw makes or attempts in an NCAA game this year.
VanVleet participated in his 100th victory -- third–most in Shocker history, and WSU extended its school-record home court winning streak to 37 games.
WSU finished over 50 percent (.511 on 24-of-47 shooting) for the first time this season. Nevada (8-4) shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) and converted 21-of-31 free throw attempts.
Eric Cooper, Jr. led the Wolf Pack with 16 points and Marqueze Coleman added 10. WSU outrebounded Nevada 38-33 and forced 18 turnovers.
Wichita State stretched its halftime lead to 24 on the heels of an old-fashioned three-point play from VanVleet, a corner three from
Evan Wessel and another trey from Baker. A putback dunk from Brown and a three from Baker gave WSU its largest lead of the game to that point, 72-46, with 8:51 left in the game.
Nevada continued to self-destruct as the half went on, racking up three technical fouls, as the Shockers stretched their lead to as many as 36 in the game. The Wolf Pack committed 24 personal fouls in the second half alone.
At the halfway mark of the first half, VanVleet drained a three from beyond NBA range as the shot clock expired to kick-start a 10-0 run. On the next two possessions Grady hit a baseline jumper and
Conner Frankamp swished a three, forcing a Nevada timeout with WSU up 26-14.
A three-pointer from
John Robert Simon with 58 seconds remaining gave the Shockers their largest lead of the half and halftime score of 44-29. Wichita State shot 58 percent from the floor in the first half, while holding the Wolf Pack to only 38 percent.
Ten of the 11 Shockers that saw time in the first half scored at least two points, and were led by VanVleet's nine points and four assists. He was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Morris added eight points and Grady chipped in seven points and five boards.
D.J. Fenner led Nevada with seven first half points, while Coleman and Lindsey Drew scored six each.
The Shockers continue a three-game homestand Dec. 28 against New Mexico State. The 7 p.m. CT tip will air on Cox Channel Kansas. Drake comes to town on New Year's Eve for a 1 p.m. tip on ESPNU to open Missouri Valley Conference play.
