OPENING TIPS
• No. 20/20 Wichita State (2-3) finishes up play in AdvoCare Invitastional with an early 7th-place tipoff against Iowa (10 a.m. ET/ 9 a.m. CT) on ESPN3.
• WSU has never gone 0-3 in an exempt tournament under Marshall and has made just one appearance in a seventh-place game (2007 - Marshall's first year - when the Shockers fell to Baylor and Monmouth in their first two Paradise Jam games before salvaging a win over Illinois-Chicago).
• Overall, the Shockers have captured at least one win in 13-straight exempt tourneys, dating back to 1998.
• WSU is below the .500 mark for the first time since Feb. 18, 2009 (a span of just over six years and 9 months, or exactly 2,473 days) when a loss at Illinois State dropped them to 13-14. They rallied to win their next two and remained at .500 or better the rest of the season.
• The Shockers are on a two-game losing streak for the first time  in two-and-a-half years, last suffering back-to-back losses in the final two games of the 2012-13 regular season. Their last three-game skid came a month prior when they fell to Indiana State at home, followed by Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois on the road.

THE SERIES WITH IOWA
WSU leads the all-time series with Iowa 5-4 and is 2-0 against the Hawkeyes under Gregg Marshall. Both of those meetings came on the exempt tournament circuit (2009 in Kansas City and 2012 in Mexico). The latter came in the title game of the Cancun Challenge... As a freshman in that 2012 meeting, Ron Baker finished 0-for-7 from the field, including 0-for-4 from deep - the only time in 76 career regular season games that Baker has failed to connect on at least one field goal.

GRADY PROGRESSING
A neurosurgeon reviewed MRI results with Wichita State men's basketball player Anton Grady Saturday morning and saw no signs of spinal cord trauma.

Doctors believe Grady suffered a spinal cord concussion during his collision with an opposing player in the Shockers' Friday afternoon game at the AdvoCare Invitational, and they anticipate that, with time, his motor function and strength will return.

Grady was alert and responsive to questions and had feeling in his extremities on Friday but had limited use of his arms and legs. By Saturday morning the latter condition had improved, especially in his upper body.

Grady will receive physical therapy over the next couple of days, and doctors will monitor his progress before making a decision on his release from the hospital.

BOOKENDS ON THE SHELF
WSU also has a talented trio of guards sitting out. All-American Fred VanVleet (hamstring) is day-to-day, freshman Landry Shamet (stress fracture) had surgery on Wednesday and is out until at least January, and sophomore Conner Frankamp is sitting out until end of the semester, per NCAA transfer rules. All three will all join or rejoin the lineup over the next three months, giving the Shockers some much-needed fire power.

McDUFFIE TO THE RESCUE
Freshman forward Markis McDuffie did not see action in a loss at Tulsa last week and had collected just five points (all on free throws) in the Shockers' first three games before making an unexpected splash at the AdvoCare Invitational. He's scored a combined 28 points off the bench in games against USC and Alabama on 56 percent shooting, going 5-of-7 from three-point range while also chipping in 10 rebounds and 5 steals.
