WSU's Taquandra Mike led WSU with 14 points while
Aundra Stovall and
Jyar Francis had 12 points each. Richmond's Michaela Parson had 20 points to lead three Spider double-figure scorers.
Richmond out-shot WSU, 45.1 percent (23-51) to 34.7 percent (17-49), and out-boarded WSU, 36-22.
The loss moves the Shockers (0-4) into a 1 p.m., Sunday matchup with the host Florida International (1-3) which lost earlier in the day to Marquette, 95-83.
Five of the six Shockers available scored as
Brittany Martin and
Marija Pacar are out with injuries, and
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage is yet to be released after knee surgery prior to her arrival at WSU. Transfer
Rangie Bessard will be eligible at the semester break after sitting out two semesters per NCAA transfer rules.
Richmond held a 33-19 lead at the half, and extended the lead to as much as 18 three times in the third quarter, but WSU continued to work the offense. Back to back three-pointers by Mike cut the RU lead to 10, 42-32, at the 4:30 mark of the third quarter. UR's lead stayed steady at 10 until Tolson hit a trey for the Spiders to take a 48-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Richmond pushed the lead back to 18 at the 6:58 mark, and then to 19 with 2:02 to go for the Spiders' largest lead. WSU cut the lead back to 13 to fashion the final score, 63-50.
In the second half, WSU out-scored Richmond, 31-30, including 16-15 in the third quarter and worked to a 15-15 tie in the fourth quarter.
In the first half, WSU trailed 16-15 in the first quarter, but Richmond won the second quarter, 17-4.
Richmond jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter before Francis came off a the bench and hit a wide-open three from the right baseline to cut the Spider lead to 7-3, at 6:34.
The teams traded baskets and Francis made two free throws over the next six minutes before the Shockers took the lead with 30 seconds left in the quarter on back-to-back three-pointers by Mike, 15-14.
Richmond's Michaela Parson took advantage of a final possession of the first quarter with a driving lay up from the right side to take the lead back for the Spiders, 16-15.
In the second quarter, Richmond's Parson scored 11 points while the Shockers were held without a basket the final seven minutes of the quarter. The Shockers missed their last 10 shots during that seven-minutes stretch as Richmond took a 33-19 lead.
For the first half, Mike's eight points led the Shockers while Parson's 12 points led Richmond. The Spiders out-shot WSU, 50 percent (12-24) to 26.5 percent (7-26).
