Shockers Fall 67-40 at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark.  --   Wichita State dropped a 67-40 decision to Arkansas State in the Convocation Center on Saturday night to fall to 0-3 overall.

Three Shockers, Jyar Francis, Brittany Martin and Jaleesa Chapel led WSU in scoring with eight points each. Martin also had 11 boards and three blocked shots for the Shockers.

ASU was led by Jessica Flannery's 14 points. Amanda Lawson and All-American Aundrea Gamble backed her with 12 points each.

ASU out-shot the Shockers, 45 percent (27-60) to 37.3 percent (19-51) and out-boarded WSU, 39-28. After 17 turnovers in the first half, WSU had just seven in the second half while the Shockers forced 15 ASU turnovers.

In addition, WSU shot just one free throw, while the Red Wolves made 11-of-16 free throws.

In the second half, ASU out-scored WSU, 13-to-2, over the first 4:48 of the third quarter to take a 41-20 lead and extended that lead to 45-24 over the next five minutes of the quarter. The Red Wolves out-scored WSU, 22-16, in the fourth frame.

ASU jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first quarter and held off the Shockers before WSU went on a 6-0 run toward the end of the quarter, including two buckets by Chapel. ASU led 14-10.

In the second quarter WSU closed the gap to one, 14-13, on a bucket and free throw by Francis, before ASU went on a 6-0 run to lead 20-13 at the 8:30 mark of the second half.

The two teams traded baskets before a four-minute stretch where neither team scored. ASU then scored back-to-back layups and Francis answered with a trey for a 26-18 Red Wolf lead. ASU ended the scoring for the half with a jumper by Bradshaw at the 1:05 mark.

ASU took a 28-18 lead into the half on 37.1 percent shooting (13-35) while WSU shot 33.3 percent (8-24). WSU turned the ball over 17 times in the first half.

Francis led WSU in scoring in the first half with eight points while ASU's Lawson also had eight points.
