CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Wichita State used 18 kills from
Shimen Fayad to defeat Northern Iowa 3-0. The Shockers won by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-22.
Emily Hiebert had 31 assists and 11 digs, while
Dani Mostrom had 18 digs.
A kill by
Shimen Fayad gave WSU a 7-5 lead in the first set. The Panthers took an 11-8 lead after a WSU hitting error, but a block by
Abbie Lehman gave the Shocks a 14-13 lead. Another Fayad kill put the Shocks up 19-16 and a Fayad service ace made the score 21-18. Back to back aces from Fayad made the score 24-18 and the Shockers won the set 25-22 on a kill from
MaryAshton Floyd.
The second set went back and forth until back to back hitting errors from the Panthers gave the Shockers an 8-6 lead. A kill by Fayad gave WSU a 15-11 lead and the Shocks won the set 25-23 on a block by Fayad.
The Panthers took a 13-11 lead in the third set after a service ace and increased it to 17-14 after back-to-kills. The Shockers tied it at 17 on a kill by Fayad and took a 23-22 lead on a block by
Emily Hiebert and
Katie Reilly. The Shockers won the set 25-22 on a UNI hitting error.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Oct. 10 at Drake at 7 p.m.
