WBB: Shockers Improve to 16-3, 7-0 with 80-61 Win

WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State improved to 16-3, 7-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference with an 80-61 win against SIU Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

The Shockers we led in scoring by Kelsey Jacobs, whose 17 points led four double-figure Shocker scorers.

WSU narrowly out-shot SIU, 54.7 percent (24-48) to 50 percent (35-64) for the game, which included a 60.6 percent effort in the first half.

Michael Dapprich had 14 points to back Jacobs' offensive effort, while Alex Harden and Alie Decker had 12 each. Brittney Martin had a career-high nine points inside for WSU in nine minutes of play.

SIU's Dyana Pierre had 21 points to lead the Saluki effort, while Kylie Giebelhausen had 18, which included four three-pointers.

The Shockers forced 23 Saluki turnovers, while the Shockers had 13 steals.

SIU closed the gap from 14 to seven out of the halftime locker room with a 9-4 run at 16:41, but WSU extended it back to 14 in the next two minutes, 52-38.

The Salukis cut it to six with two three pointers by Giebelhausen and a bucket by Macklin at the 8:36 mark, but a Decker three put WSU back up nine, 59-50, at 8:18.

A Michael Dapprich three followed by a Decker three at 6:04 gave WSU a 13 point lead ensured four double-figure Shocker scorers for the third-straight game.

The Shockers extended the lead to 17, 73-56 in a Jacobs three at 3:41 to cap an 8-2 run.

In the first half, Wichita State jumped to a 10-0 lead on five points from Jacobs, four from Bonner and one from Harden which forced SIU to call timeout at the 17:44 mark.

SIU got on the board with two four shots from Washington at 17:19. WSU answered with a driving lay-up by Harden, and a layup from Michaela Dapprich for a 12 point lead at 15:42.

The two teams traded baskets during the next eight minutes as the lead stayed steady between 9-11 points until SIU's Giebelhausen hit a three from in front of the Shocker bench at 6:57 to cut it to eight, 28-20.

The Shockers went on a 7-0 run to extend it back to 15, the last points on a Jacobs layup to force another SIU timeout.

WSU extended the run to 11-0 before SIU made two free throws at the 3:48 mark after the last media timeout of the half, 41-24.

The Shockers made 10-straight shots from the 8:52 mark to the 3:30 mark, including buckets by five different players.

SIU out-scored WSU 5-2 over the final two minutes, but WSU took a 43-29 lead into the half.

WSU out-shot the Salukis, 60.6 percent (20-33) to 45.8 (11-24) in the first half. Jacobs led WSU scorers with nine points, while Pierre and Giebelhausen had eight each for SIU.

WSU is next in action Friday and Sunday at UNI and Drake, respectively.
