VB: Driskill Leads Shocks to 3-2 Win Over BGSU

OMAHA, Neb. – Wichita State used a career-high 20 kills from Ashlyn Driskill to defeat Bowling Green 3-2 at the Bluejay Invitational. The Shockers won by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 28-30, 33-35 and 16-14.

Mikaela Raudsepp added 17 kills and 11 digs, while Emily Hiebert had a career-high 62 assists and Dani Mostrom tied her career-high with 30 digs.

WSU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set after a block by Abbie Lehman and Kristin Byers. The Falcons used a kill to pull within 6-4, but the Shockers reeled off 5-2 run to go in front 11-6. BGSU answered with a 7-2 run to tie it at 13 and the two teams traded points until the Shockers used a 3-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. Back-to-back kills from Ashlyn Driskill gave WSU a 22-18 advantage, but the Falcons scored three-straight to pull within 22-21. WSU used a kill from Katie Reilly to win the set 25-22.

The second set went back and forth until the Shockers used a kill from Driskill to go up 10-8. The Falcons came back to take a 15-14 lead, but back to back blocks from the Shockers gave WSU a 16-15 lead. Neither team had more than a one point lead until a block gave BGSU a 22-20 lead. The Shockers answered with a 3-0 run with a couple of kills from Mikaela Raudsepp to take a 23-22 lead. WSU won the set 25-23 on a kill by Kristin Byers.

The Falcons took an early 13-8 lead in the third set, but the Shockers used a 4-1 run to pull within 16-15. BGSU used three-straight kills to go up 19-15, but a kill and service ace from Reilly pulled the Shockers within 20-18. WSU tied it at 21 after a Falcon hitting error and the two teams traded points until BGSU scored three-straight to win 30-28.

WSU took a 4-3 lead in the fourth set on a kill by Lehman, but the Falcons slowly pulled away to take a 12-8 lead. BGSU increased the lead to 18-11, but the Shockers chipped away and cut the lead to 20-18 after a kill by Driskill. WSU finally tied it at 22 after a Falcon hitting error and the set went back and forth until a Shocker hitting error gave BGSU a 35-33 win.

A service ace by Raudsepp gave WSU a quick 3-1 lead in the fifth and a block by Reilly and Raudsepp increased the lead to 8-5. The Falcons used back-to-back blocks to pull within 10-9, but a Driskill kill put WSU up 13-11. BGSU used a 3-0 run to tie the set at 14, but Reilly ended it with two-straight kills for a 16-14 win.

The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 13 against Pepperdine at 10 a.m.
