Box Score NORMAL, Ill. – Wichita State scored two runs in the top of the ninth to defeat Illinois State 2-0 in game one of a three-game series.
Starter A.J. Ladwig went seven shutout innings and allowed just three singles with one walk and seven strikeouts.
Reliever Aaron LaBrie earned the win to improve to 5-2 on the year. He pitched two shutout innings with two strikeouts.
Tanner Kirk went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Casey Gillaspie went 1-for-1 with three walks.
After a leadoff walk to Gillaspie in the ninth, a fielder's choice put a runner at first with one out. Chase Simpson singled up the middle to move Dayne Parker to third and after an intentional walk to Tyler Baker loaded the bases, Garrett Bayliff's sacrifice fly to right field scored Parker for a 1-0 lead. Tanner Kirk then singled to left field to score Simpson to give WSU a 2-0 lead.
The Shockers and Redbirds play game two of the series on Fri., May 16 at 6 p.m.
