WTen: No. 50 Shocks Sweep Road DH, Begins 2-0 in MVC Play

WICHITA, Kan. – No. 50 Wichita State (13-6, 2-0) defeated Illinois State (8-6, 1-1) by a 6-1 score at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill. and Bradley (4-11, 0-2) 7-0 in Peoria, Ill. to begin Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play with a 2-0 record. The Shockers also completed the last of their 12 dual-matches in a row on the road, going 7-5 during that stretch.

Illinois State—Match One

Doubles play began with a Rebecca Pedrazzi/Montse Blasco Fernandez (No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Central Doubles Rankings) 8-1  win over Carolina Abello/Sierra Stone at No. 2 doubles. The Shockers clinched the doubles point and took the 1-0 dual-match advantage after Julia Schiller/Abby Stevens (No. 7 in the ITA's Central Doubles Rankings) defeated Heather Nisbet/Kadi Ilves 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

Although the doubles point was already clinched, Phyllis Tigges/Madeline Baillon of Illinois State took down Veronika Blaskova/Lucia Kovalova 8-6 at No. 1 doubles.

Blasco Fernandez was first off the courts in singles play when she defeated Natalia Parchowska 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to give the Shockers a 2-0 dual-match lead. Schiller pushed the Shocker lead to 3-0 after winning 6-0, 6-3 in her match against Tigge at No. 1 singles.

Pedrazzi and Kovalova took No. 50 Wichita State's dual-match advantage from 3-0 to 5-0 after both were victorious in their singles matches. While Pedrazzi won 6-3, 6-2 against Stone at No. 2 singles, Kovalova earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Abello at No. 3 singles.

Baillon won 6-2, 2-6, 14-12 over Stevens to give the Redbirds their only point of the day and cut the Shocker lead to 5-1 at No. 4 singles. At No. 6 singles, Blaskova finished the match with an 8-3 win over Ilves to give the Shockers their 6-1 dual-match victory and a 1-0 start to MVC play.

Bradley—Match Two

Doubles play began with a Schiller/Stevens (No. 7 in the ITA's Central Doubles Rankings) win due to forfeit at No. 3 doubles. Kovalova/Blaskova clinched the doubles point for the Shockers and gave them the 1-0 dual-match lead when they won 8-3 against Ariel Dechter/Sarah Rodefeld at No 1 doubles.

After the doubles point was clinched, Pedrazzi/Blasco Fernandez (No. 9 in the ITA's Central Doubles Rankings) defeated Ashley Thai/Carly Miles 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Blaskova won her match due to forfeit to give the Shockers a 2-0 dual-match lead at No. 6 singles. Kovalova pushed the Shocker advantage to 3-0 after taking down Rodefeld 6-2, 6-0 out of the No. 3 singles slot.

Blasco Fernandez and Stevens extended the Shocker lead from 3-0 to 5-0 after both won their singles matches. At No. 5 singles, Blasco Fernandez won 6-2, 6-0 over Cassia Wojtalik and at No. 4 singles, Stevens defeated Miles 6-1, 6-2.

Pedrazzi and Schiller finished the dual-match with wins, providing the Shockers their 7-0 final score. At No. 2 singles, Pedrazzi won 6-3, 6-2 in her match with Thai and Schiller won 4-6, 6-4, 12-10 against Dechter.
