WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State fell 5-1 to No. 9 Cal State Fullerton on Friday at Eck Stadium. The Shockers dropped to 14-10 while the Titans improved to 14-8.

Thomas Eshelman (5-0) picked up the win after pitching seven innings and giving up one run (unearned) on six hits with four strikeouts. A.J. Ladwig (2-3) took the loss after pitching seven innings and giving up two runs on five hits while walking two batters. Koby Gauna picked up his third save of the season.

J.D. Davis led the way for the Titans, as he went 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Tanner Kirk was 2-3 with a double to lead the Shockers.

The Titans took a 1-0 lead during the top of the third when Davis singled to right center, scoring Austin Diemer from second base.

No. 9 Cal State Fullerton scored once in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 2-0. Keegan Dale hit a RBI-single up the middle that scored Jake Jefferies from second.

Wichita State cut the Titan lead in half in the bottom of the seventh when Kirk doubled to right center. Wes Phillips advanced to third from the Kirk double and then scored on a Clay Williamson throwing error.

Williamson gave No. 9 Cal State Fullerton a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth when he scored on a Ray Ashford wild pitch from third base.

During the top of the ninth, the Titans scored two more runs. Davis singled to short, scoring Timmy Richards and Tanner Pinkston recorded a RBI after a bases loaded walk to give No. 9 Cal State Fullerton the 5-1 victory.

Game two of the No. 9 Cal State Fullerton/Wichita State three-game series takes place on Saturday inside Eck Stadium at 2 p.m. The game can also be seen on Kansas 22.
