Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State fell 7-3 to Nebraska on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium. While the Shockers fell to 14-9, the Cornhuskers improved to 14-9.
Wichita State's Kris Gardner (1-2) lost for the second time this season. He pitched two and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs on six hits while striking out two.
Kyle Kubat (1-1) picked up his first win of the season for Nebraska. He pitched six and two-thirds innings, gave up three runs (two earned) on eight hits and had two strikeouts. Zach Hirsch earned his second save.
Casey Gillaspie and Tyler Baker led the way for the Shockers. Gillaspie was 2-4 and Baker was 1-4 with his second home run of the season.
Pat Kelly led the way for the Cornhuskers by going 3-5 with two RBI.
The Shockers scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead from a Chase Simpson two-RBI single. He singled through the right side to score Garrett Bayliff and Casey Gillaspie before being thrown out at second base to end the inning.
Nebraska answered Wichita State's two-run bottom of the first with a run in the top of the second. Tanner Lubach scored from third after a Bryce Only groundout to third that cut the early Shocker advantage in half.
Baker hit his second home run to push the Shocker lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second. During the top of the third, RBI singles by Jake Placzek, Kelly and Ryan Boldt gave the Cornhuskers a 4-3 lead and chased Gardner from the game.
Kelly extended Nebraska's lead to 5-3 in the top of the fifth with a RBI-single to left that scored Michael Pritchard.
Nebraska added two more runs in the top of the ninth to go up 7-3. Pritchard scored on a passed ball and later, Lubach scored Pritchard when he hit a RBI-single.
The Shockers next game will be on Wednesday when they travel to Tulsa, Okla. to face Oral Roberts at 6:30 p.m.
