Box Score TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona State jumped out to a 6-1 lead and went on to defeat Wichita State 9-5 in the first game of a two-game series.
Casey Gillaspie went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Chase Simpson went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a triple.
Starter Kris Gardner took the loss. He went 1.1 innings and gave up three runs on three hits with three walks.
Johnny Sewald led off the first with a single to left field and advanced to second on a one-out single from RJ Ybarra. A walk to Nathaniel Causey loaded the bases and Brian Serven singled through the left side to drive in Sewald and Ybarra to give ASU an early 2-0 lead.
The Sun Devils added a run in the second. Dalton Dinatale led off the inning with a walk and scored on a wild throw on a bunt attempt by Cullen O'Dwyer to make the score 3-0.
With one out in the third, Tanner Dearman singled up the middle and moved to second on a groundout. Dearman stole third and scored on a single to centerfield from Casey Gillaspie to cut the lead to 3-1.
ASU used three hits, a catcher's interference and a walk to add three more runs in the fourth for a 6-1 lead.
With one out in the sixth, Gillaspie singled up the middle and moved to second a single to right field from Garrett Bayliff. With two outs, Micah Green reached on an error that allowed both Gillaspie and Bayliff to score to cut the lead to 6-3. Chase Simpson then tripled to right-center to score Green to make the score 6-4.
The Sun Devils used an RBI single from Colby Woodmansee and a two-run home run from Drew Stankiewicz in the eighth for a 9-4 lead.
The Shockers added an unearned run in the ninth for the final 9-5 score.
The Shockers and Sun Devils wrap up the series on Wed., March 19 at 8:30 p.m. Central time.
