WBB: Shocks Defeat Missouri State, Move into Semifinals

ST. CHARLES, Mo.- Alex Harden recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wichita State women's basketball team into the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, defeating Missouri State 71-53 inside Family Arena on Friday night.

Jamillah Bonner added 19 points and Michelle Price also scored in double figures with 14 points.

The Shockers took a 9-6 lead into the first media timeout, and Harden capped an 8-0 run for Wichita State with a pull-up jumper at the free-throw line to give her team a 15-6 advantage at the 14:15 mark.

Two minutes later, Alie Decker connected on a three-pointer and Bonner had a steal and a layup on the next possession to force a Missouri State timeout and give the Shockers a 22-11 lead.

After Wichita State went up by as many as 12, Missouri State went on a 7-0 run cut lead to 24-19 with 7:36 remaining in the first half. The Shocker lead would get down to two before Bonner hit a free throw and Kelsey Jacobs connected on a free-throw line jumper to give Wichita State a 32-27 lead at the break.

The Shockers shot 13-for-29 (.448) from the field in the first half and held the Bears to 9-of-27 (.333) shooting. Bonner led all scorers with 13 points, while Harden added six of her own. Wichita State out-scored Missouri State 18-10 in the paint, but were out-rebounded 21-17.

Wichita State opened half with a 6-0 run capped by a Harden two-point jumper to give the Shockers a 38-27 lead with 18:21 remaining in the game.

Four minutes later, Harden hit two more jumpers on back-to-back possessions to stretch the Wichita State lead to 48-33, and then a driving layup from Bonner capped an 8-0 run for the Shockers.

Missouri State scored nine-consecutive points to cut it to nine-point Shockers lead. Wichita State then answered with a 9-0 run of its own, capped with a jumper in the paint by Michelle Price to put her team up 18, 59-41 with a little more than six minutes left in the game.

The Shockers held the lead the rest of the way, going up by as many as 22 and winning 71-53. Wichita State shot 25-for-55 (.455) for the game and held Bears to 18-of-49 (.367) shooting, scoring 26 points off 27 Missouri State turnovers.

Wichita State will take on the winner of No. 3 Northern Iowa and No. 6 Illinois State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
