SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – No. 20 UC Santa Barbara defeated Wichita State 2-1 in game one of a three-game series.

Shocker starter A.J. Ladwig went seven innings and gave up two runs on seven hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Tyler Baker went 2-for-3 for the Shockers and Casey Gillaspie went 1-for-4 with a home run.

The Gauchos got on the board in the third inning. Joey Epperson singled through the left side with one out and moved to third on a single through the right side from Peter Maris. Epperson scored on a single through the left side from Woody Woodward for the 1-0 lead.

Woodward led off the sixth with an infield single and with one out stole second. He scored on a double down the left field line from Andrew Calica to give the Gauchos a 2-0 lead.

Casey Gillaspie broke up the shutout with a solo home run in the top of the ninth to left-center to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Shockers and Gauchos play game two of the series on Sat., March 15 at 4 p.m. Central time.
