WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita State women's basketball team improved to 5-2 with a 55-26 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff in front of 10,087 fans, the fifth-best attendance in history, at the annual Schoolhouse Rocks with the Shocks game.
The Shockers were led in scoring by Alex Harden, who collected her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She was backed by Jamillah Bonner's 16 points and Michaela Dapprich's 12 points.
The 26 points WSU held UAPB to in the game is the second lowest total by a Shocker opponent in history and the lowest output by a Division I team against the Shockers. In 1974-75, WSU held Sterling College to 20 points in a 63-20 win.
UAPB (2-5) was led in scoring by three players with six points each — Mollie Campbell, Shami Goodman and Carlisha Walker.
WSU out-shot UAPB, 35 percent (20-58) to 26 percent (11-43) and also won the battle of the boards, 40-33.
After a slow offensive start, Wichita State used a 9-0 run over the final two minutes of the first half to take a 27-16 lead into the locker room, and continued pulling away as the second half began.
Michaela Dapprich's three pointer at the 11:44 mark of the second half completed a 16-6 Shocker
run to put WSU up 21, 43-22.
A Harden steal and breakaway layup, and a Dapprich jumper, added to the run and put the Shocker lead at 47-22 with eight minutes remaining.
WSU out-scored UAPB, 28-10, over the final eight minutes, holding the Golden Lions to 10 points in the final frame.
To open the first half, WSU held UAPB without a field goal until the 15:19 mark, which tied the score at 4-4.
It was back and forth until UAPB went up 12-9 at the 9:39 mark. It was the Golden Lions' last lead of the game.
Jacobs layup at 7:29 put WSU up 12-11, and was the Shockers' first field goal since the 14:37 mark.
Wichita State took the lead for good at 6:32 on two Harden free throws, 14-12, and started to pull away. WSU then went up 23-16 on Bonner's three-pointer and foul shot at 1:52.
Dapprich's layup at 1:18, put WSU up 25-16, and was followed by Harden's steal and layup that put WSU up 27-16 heading into the half.
WSU recovered the slow shooting start to make 30.8 percent (8-26) in the first half after making just 3-of-21 to open the game, while UAPB's shooting fell to 26.1 percent (7-27).
Harden led WSU in scoring in the first frame with 10 points, while Makayla Wormley led UAPB with seven points.
