WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State (9-3) defeated the Sam Houston State Bearkats (1-9), 70-46, on Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.
Jamillah Bonner led the Shockers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Alie Decker and Michaela Dapprich had 14 points each. Jaleesa Chapel added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Overall, WSU out-shot the Bearkats, 39 percent (24-61) to 26.7 percent (12-45).
WSU held the Bearkats to 13 points and 19 percent in the first half to help put the game out of reach. SHSU did score 33 points in the second half to WSU's 34 points.
The Shockers defense helped cause most of SHSU's 27 turnovers and a 10-rebound margin, 43-33, contributed to the 70-46 victory.
Wichita State went on a 12-2 run to open the second half, and led by as much as 33 at the 15:20 mark.
Sam Houston State cut the Shocker lead back to 19 at the 8:41 mark on Robertson's second trey
of the game. WSU answered and pushed the lead back to 27 on a Decker trey with 5:21 left.
SHSU out-scored WSU 13-6 over the final 5:21 of the game, but it wasn't enough to overcome the first-half deficit.
WSU opened the game with an 8-0 run capped by a Decker three-pointer, her second in the run, forcing a Bearkat timeout at the 16:13 mark.
The Shocker increased the lead to 23-4 on another Decker trey from the left side out of the media timeout at 9:54, and after both teams traded baskets, it was 25-6 with 7:50 left.
Wichita State's lead held steady until the 3:58 mark, before Bonner made two free throws to increase the WSU lead to 31-10 following the timeout.
A Moriah Dapprich jumper was the last score of the first half and increased WSU's lead to 25, 36-13, with 2:50 remaining.
Bonner led WSU at the half offensively with 11 points, while Jazmin Wiley scored four to lead SHSU. The Shockers shot 38 percent (13-34) to SHSU's 19 percent (4-21).
The Shockers' next game will be on Friday, Jan. 2 as they begin Missouri Valley Conference play when they take on Indiana State at 7 p.m. inside the Charles Koch Arena.
