Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- Darius Carter's dunk with 11 seconds remaining pulled the Wichita State men's basketball team past Alabama 53-52 on Tuesday night inside Charles Koch Arena.
The Shockers set a school-record with their 23rd consecutive home victory.
Carter led the way for the Shockers with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting while pulling down six rebounds. Ron Baker added 14 points and five rebounds and Fred VanVleet scored nine points and handed out five assists.
After Alabama connected on a jumper at the 19:22 mark, neither team scored until Carter hit a jumper with 16:46 remaining in the first half to tie the score at two. Carter hit another jumper on the next Wichita State offensive possession to put the Shockers up 4-2 going into the first media timeout.
Carter continued to carry the Shockers offensively, completing two old-fashioned three-point plays around a Ron Baker three-point jumper. Carter's second three-point play saw Wichita State take the lead to 13-9 at the 11:46 mark.
Two minutes later, Rian Holland connected on three from the left corner to make the score 18-14 with 9:48 remaining in the half.
The Shocker lead hovered around five the rest of the way until the Crimson Tide closed the half with
six consecutive points to take a one point lead, 25-24, into the locker room.
Wichita State shot 9-for-27 (.333) from the floor in the first 20 minutes while Alabama shot 9-for-24 (.375). Carter led the scoring for Wichita State with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, while Baker added six points and three rebounds.
Alabama came out of the locker room firing and used a 7-0 run to take a 36-28 lead with 13:41 remaining in the game. The Shockers kept within reach as VanVleet and Baker each hit three's to cut separate Crimson Tide eight-point leads down to five.
Later, down 11, Wichita State closed the game on a 13-1 run over the last 4:56 to seal the victory. Over that span, they forced four Alabama turnovers and held the Crimson Tide to 1-of-5 shooting. Rashard Kelly's back-to-back buckets tied the game at 51-51 with just over a minute remaining before Carter's slam off a dish from VanVleet won the game after an Alabama free throw.
The Shockers shot 20-for-49 (.408) from the floor for the game and won the rebounding battle 32-28.
Wichita State will now head to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic where it will face Loyola Marymount in the first game of the tournament on Mon., Dec. 22 at 10 p.m.
