Box Score

DETROIT, Mich. – A blue collar town required a blue collar effort.

Ron Baker scored 19 points, Darius Carter recorded his second straight double-double and No. 11 Wichita State overcame a 10-point deficit in the final 12 minutes to down Detroit, 77-68, Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.

Carter finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds (with 14 of those points and all but three rebounds coming in the second half). Carter's third career double-double came just four days removed from a 16 points, 12 rebound night against Seton Hall.

Baker went 6-of-18 from the field, 3-of-12 from three. Fred VanVleet and Tekele Cotton chipped in 11 points each for WSU (7-1).

Juwan Howard Jr. paced the scoring for Detroit (6-4) with 27 points but needed 23 shots to do it.

The Shockers improved to 10-0 in Bracket Busters return games.

WSU hit its first four three-point attempts to start the game. All five starters had scored before the game was even five minutes old, as WSU built a quick 16-5 lead.

Detroit roared back, hitting eight of its next 11 shots. WSU, meanwhile, missed 14 of its next 15 treys – a stretch that continued deep into the second half.

The Shockers led 35-31 at the half on Carter's baseline jumper just ahead of the buzzer.

Detroit opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take its first lead of the day. Howard was instrumental in that stretch, sinking several long jumpers.

WSU's comeback was built on offensive rebounding and defense. The Shockers turned forced nine steals and outrebounded Detroit 42-35. That total included 18 offensive boards.

The Shockers trailed 54-44 at the 11:44 mark on a Brandan Kearney trey but got six points back in one fell swoop.

Ria'n Holland snagged an offensive board and put back the miss. Cotton forced a steal in the backcourt, and Baker fed Carter in the lane for a one-handed slam and a foul.

Carter missed his free throw but drew a foul when he rebounded his own miss. This time he hit both charity shots to get WSU back within 54-50 with 11:43 left.

Both sides upped the intensity in the minutes to come. WSU launched a 10-2 run but had to work for its points.

Carter stuck a hook shot, then attempted – and connected – on his first career three-pointer. VanVleet's free throw at 5:40 tied the game at 60.

Cotton hit a three less than a minute later to give the Shockers their first lead since early in the half, 63-60, with 5:13 left.

After Detroit answered, Carter ripped down an offensive rebound and worked around four defenders for the stick back and a 65-60 edge at the 4:12 mark.

Baker ended a run of nine straight misses from three in the nick of time, burying a timely trey with 2:44 remaining to give WSU some breathing room, 68-62.

Carter tipped in a miss at 1:27 to make it a seven-point game, and the Shockers closed it out with free throws.

A battle of two of the top 20 teams nationally in turnover margin went the Shockers' way. Despite pressure defense from Detroit, WSU committed just 10 giveaways, while forcing 13 from the Titans.

Detroit outshot the Shockers 44.8 to 41.3 percent from the field. Both sides knocked down nine treys, but WSU outscored the Titans from the foul line, 16-7.

WSU returns home Tuesday night to face Alabama in an 8:00 p.m. CT tip on ESPN2.
