VB: Shocks Win in Five Sets Over Missouri State

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State volleyball team defeated Missouri State 3-2 on Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers won by scores of 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19 and 15-11.

Ashlyn Driskill led the way for Wichita State with 17 kills, while MaryAshton Floyd and Abbie Lehman each added 13 kills. Emily Hiebert had 50 assists and Dani Mostrom contributed 25 digs.

MSU took an early 7-4 lead in the first set after a kill from Lily Johnson, but the Shockers tied it at seven on a kill by Abbie Lehman and took an 8-7 lead on a service ace from MaryAshton Floyd.  A block by Lehman and Ashlyn Driskill increased the lead to 10-8, but the Bears scored the next two points to tie it at 10. The two teams traded points with the Shockers taking a 23-22 lead on a kill from Driskill. The Bears responded with the next three points to win 25-23.

The Bears jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the second set after a kill from Andrea Beaty. A 3-0 Shocker run tied the set at 10, but the Bears answered with a 3-0 run for a 13-10 lead. A kill by Emily Hiebert tied the score at 18 and WSU took a 20-19 lead on a Bear hitting error. A kill by Floyd increased the lead to 23-20 and a service ace from Hiebert brought the Shockers to set point at 24-20. WSU won the set 25-21 on a kill from Lehman.

Wichita State fell behind quickly in third set and eventually found themselves down 19-9. They fought back however to pull within 23-18 before the Bears won the set 25-19.

The Shockers took an early 9-5 lead in the fourth set off back-to-back kills from Floyd and Katie Reilly.  Later in the set, a kill from Lehman stretched the Wichita State lead to 17-9. Missouri State closed within four, 23-19, before the Shockers used back-to-back kills to take the set 25-19.

Four early kills in the fifth set by Ashlyn Driskill helped Wichita State jump out to a 7-3 lead to take control. The Shockers never looked back and took the fifth set, 15-11.

The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Nov. 14 when they host Evansville at 5 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena.

Notes for Nov. 14 match: Volleyball Season Ticket Holders who have a reserved parking permit will be permitted to park in the lot directly West of Wiedemann Hall (Lot 16); the Southern most end of the lot located between Hillside and Perimeter Road  (Lot 1s); and the lot on the Northeast side of Cessna Stadium (Lot 3n).  

Men's Basketball parking permit holders will be allowed access into these lots with their Bold Gold permit.

Regular campus shuttle service will continue. Those routes and schedules can be found at wichita.edu/parking

Dropoffs will be permitted

Any person who presents a MBB ticket to the Shocker Ticket Office receives free admission to the Nov. 14 Volleyball match
