WBB: Shockers Regroup for 70-55 Win over Ohio State

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands – Three Shockers scored in double-figures on Friday afternoon to lead a balanced attack in a 70-55 win over Ohio State on the second day of the Paradise Jam at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center.

Wichita State will take on Clemson in its final game of the tournament tomorrow at 12:15 p.m. CT at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. It will mark the first meeting between the two programs.

WSU (3-2) was led by Michaela Dapprich who scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc. Jamillah Bonner contributed 18 points and five assists. She scored 12 of her points after halftime. Alex Harden collected her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Harden also dished out a game-high five assists.

On a day when Wichita State didn't attempt a single free throw, the Shockers found other ways to score. The Shockers shot 48 percent (30-for-62) for the game after shooting 15-for-27 (55 percent) in the second half. Nearly half of the Shockers' 15 second half field goals came from three-point range (6-for-10). WSU was 10-for-20 from downtown for the game.

Ohio State (3-3) was held to just 37.7 percent from the field in the game and 30 percent (6-for-20) from beyond the three-point line.

Kelsey Mitchell led the Buckeyes with 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field. Alexa Hart scored 14 and Ameryst Alston chipped in 10 points.

Bonner gave WSU a scoring boost to start the second half to put WSU up 39-25 with five quick points. From there the Shockers would run that lead all the way up to 24, 56-32.

During Wichita State's run to lead by 24, five different Shockers scored, including a three from Alie Decker and a couple baskets from Kelsey Jacobs.

Dapprich got the Shockers out to a fast start by scoring 11 of her 13 first half points in the first six-plus minutes of the game. She finished 5-for-6 from the field, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Harden chipped in seven points and a team-leading seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes of play.

As a team, WSU shot 42.9 percent (15-for-35) from the field and 4-for-10 from three-point range. Ohio State connected on 9-of-21 attempts, which was also good for 42.9 percent.

The Shocker defense forced 11 first half Buckeye turnovers, while only turning it over four times in the half en route to a lead as big as 12.

Hart and Mitchell led the Buckeyes with eight points apiece in the first half.
