WICHITA, Kan. – Jamillah Bonner's 21 points and 10 rebounds helped Wichita State defeat UT Arlington, 71-61, Saturday afternoon in front of 1,549 fans inside Charles Koch Arena.
Bonner's offensive effort was backed by 16 points from Michaela Dapprich, 13 from Alie Decker and 12 from Alex Harden.
Cierra Johnson had 17 points for UTA to lead the Mavericks' three double-figure scorers.
WSU out-shot the Mavs, 51 percent (26-51) to 44.3 percent (27-61) while the Shockers made 7-of-10 from the arc compared to UTA's 2-of-10 effort. Decker led WSU's charge from deep, making three-of-three attempts, while Bonner and Dapprich had two treys each.
Eleven of Dapprich's 16 points came with foul trouble as she picked up her fourth foul with 19:45
left in the second half.
In the second half, the Shockers gave up two quick buckets that cut the lead to one, before the two teams exchanged leads over the first eight minutes.
WSU extended the lead to 12 over the next four minutes, out-scoring the Mavs, 10-0 to take a 53-41 lead at the 9:08 mark on a Michaela Dapprich three-pointer.
The teams again traded baskets over the next minute as WSU's lead held steady at 10 points into the eight-minute timeout, 55-45.
The Shockers again answered the Mavs' offense over the final eight minutes, keeping the lead at between seven to 11 points before two Bonner free throws with nine seconds remaining gave WSU its third 12-point lead of the half.
A UTA shot at the buzzer by Toma Zaleckaite fashioned the final score, 71-61.
To open the game, UTA held a 13-8 lead into the first media timeout at 15:50 on 50 percent (5-10) shooting, while the Shockers made just three-of-seven shots.
The Shockers closed the gap to one, 19-18, on a White jumper, two Harden buckets and a trey by Alie Decker by the 13:55 mark.
WSU tied it 19-19 at the 12:53 mark on a free throw by Bonner that held into the media timeout at 11:54.
The two teams held each other scoreless until the 8:56 mark when WSU took the lead on a White jumper from the left, 21-19. UTA answered back with a bucket and it was tied again at 21-21.
The Shockers scored six-straight points heading into the last media timeout for a 31-27 lead at 3:21, and extended the lead to eight on a Harden jumper at 2:04 left in the half.
The Shockers held onto the lead, 35-31, heading into half time as the Mavericks out-scored WSU, 4-0 over the final two minutes of the first half.
WSU's Decker and UTA's Johnson led scoring for each team with 10, and nine points, respectively, in the first half. The Shockers shot 48 percent (12-25), while UTA shot 44.8 percent (13-29). Each team had nine turnovers and UTA held a slight 17-16 rebounds lead.
