Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – Behind the second highest hitting percentage in program history, the Wichita State Shockers swept the Evansville Purple Aces, 3-0, on Friday night at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers hit .553 for the match to won by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-10.
The win moves Wichita State to 17-8 overall this season and 11-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference, while Evansville dropped to 8-20 and 4-12.
Abbie Lehman paved the way for WSU with 16 kills and a hitting percentage of .727. MaryAshton Floyd totaled 10 kills and eight digs. Emily Hiebert registered 39 assists on the night, while Dani Mostrom led the team with 14 digs.
As a team, the Shocks combined for 46 kills. The Purple Aces finished with just 23 kills and hit just .087. WSU registered 41 assists as a team compared to just 18 for Evansville.
Wichita State opened the first set with a 6-1 lead, before stretching it to 9-2. Evansville put together a quick 3-0 run to close the gap to 9-5. With the score 13-9, the Shockers used an 8-0 run to go up 21-9. WSU clinched the set by a final of 25-10. Lehman paced the Shockers with seven kills, while the whole Evansville team managed just six in the set. Hiebert recorded 15 assists.
The two teams traded points to begin the match before WSU stretched its lead to 12-8 midway through the second set. The lead would grow to 18-12 forcing an Evansville timeout. Wichita State claimed the second set, 25-13, behind four more kills from Lehman. WSU tallied 14 more kills as a team, while hitting .560.
Evansville began the third set with a 6-5 lead, but an 8-0 run put WSU in the lead for good. The Shockers cruised to a 25-9 win in the final set. Lehman produced a set-high five kills.
WSU concludes its home slate for the 2014 season Saturday night vs. Southern Illinois at 7 p.m. The match is part of Wichita Eagle Family Night and “Blackout” match. All fans in attendance are encouraged to wear their favorite black Shocker gear.
