WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's basketball team grabbed its 16th consecutive win with a victory over the Southern Illinois Salukis, 74-51, Friday night inside Charles Koch arena.
Michaela Dapprich led all scorers with 17 in the contest on 5-of-10 shooting, including 2-of-2 from three-point range. Jamillah Bonner added 14 points for the Shockers, while Alex Harden and Michelle Price each scored 12 points respectively. Wichita State (17-2, 8-0) shot 25-for-64 (39.1 percent) from the field and 4-for-14 (28.6 percent) from beyond the arc, holding Southern Illinois (4-15, 2-6) to 34 percent (17-for-49) and 25 percent (3-for-21) from three-point range.
Shots were not falling for either team in the early going but the Shockers made it to the free throw line in the opening minutes and Bonner hit a three to give Wichita State a 7-0 lead with 17:26 left in the first half.
The Salukis got their first bucket of the game at the 17:03 mark with a jumper in the middle of the lane, but the Shockers went on a 10-1 run to extend the lead, 17-3. Wichita State held Southern Illinois without a field goal for a six-minute period before the Salukis hit a three in the corner at the 11:11 mark to cut the Shocker lead, 17-7.
Dapprich hit a three at the top of the key to spark a 12-0 run for Wichita State as the Shockers headed to the locker room with a 39-11 advantage. The 11 points ties a record for least points scored in a half for Southern Illinois, the last time coming against Saint Louis in 2009.
Wichita State shot 31 percent (11-for-35) from the field and 33 percent (4-for-12) from three-point range, holding Southern Illinois to just 17 percent (4-for 24) from the field and 17 percent (1-for-6) from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play. The Shockers forced 14 turnovers in the first half and outrebounded the Salukis 27-20.
Price opened the second half with a jumper at the 19:10 mark to start a 7-2 run for Wichita State and extended the lead, 43-13. Jacobs laid it in with 16-06 left in the game to give the Shockers their biggest lead of the game, 48-13. Southern Illinois went on a 7-1 run over the next couple of minutes to try and chisel away at the Wichita State lead, 49-20, but two free throws by Price and a layup by Bonner got the lead back up, 54-24 with 10:30 left in the game.
The Salukis went 4-for-4 over the next three minutes, capped by a jumper at the 7:43 mark to cut away at the lead once again, 60-41, but a Price responded with a layup and Dapprich hit one shortly after to extend the lead back, 64-21. The two teams traded buckets for the rest of the game and Wichita State went on to win 74-51.
The Shockers have a quick turnaround as they host Evansville Sunday, Feb. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. and will be shown on Kansas 22.
