Box Score WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State men's basketball team remains one of three undefeated teams in the NCAA after its 68-48 victory over Indiana State Saturday afternoon in Charles Koch Arena.
Ron Baker led the Shockers with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while Fred VanVleet was close behind with 15 points and three assists. Chadrack Lufile compiled his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Wichita State (19-0, 6-0) shot 43 percent (24-for-56) from the field and 20 percent (3-for-15) from three-point range, holding Indiana State (14-4, 5-1) to 31 percent (16-for-51) and 25 percent (5-for-20) from behind the arc.
The two teams traded baskets in the early going until seven straight points from VanVleet put the Shockers up 15-8 at the 11:21 mark of the first half. Wichita State held Indiana State without a field goal for over four minutes before the Sycamores hit a jumper with 10:03 left in the half to cut the Shocker lead, 15-10.
Indiana State hit back-to-back layups to chip at the Wichita State lead, 17-14 but a three-pointer and jumper from Baker extended the lead back, 25-16 with 3:04 to go in the first half. A layup by Cotton with 28 seconds left gave the Shockers their biggest lead of the half, 31-20, but the Sycamores put in two free throws to end the half, 31-22.
VanVleet led all scorers at the half with nine on 3-of-5 shooting, while Baker chipped in eight and Cotton led Wichita State with five rebounds in the first 20 minutes. The Shockers shot 45 percent (11-for-24) from the field and 25 percent (2-for-8) from behind the arc, while holding the Sycamores to 33 percent (8-for-24) from the field and 25 percent (2-for-8) from three-point range.
Wichita State started the second half on a 16-4 run in the first eight minutes, capped by a layup by Darius Carter at the 12:32 mark. The Shockers kept the Sycamores from scoring a field goal until the 12:15 mark, giving Wichita State a 47-26 advantage.
The Shockers were held without a field goal for two minutes before Baker laid one in at the 10:24 mark to extend the Wichita State lead, 58-33. Baker proceeded to score six of the next eight points to get the crowd on their feet and give the Shockers a 63-36 lead with 8:47 left in the contest.
The Sycamores went on a 12-1 run over the next six minutes, capped by a three pointer with 3:18 left in the game to cut the Shocker lead, 64-48, but it wasn't enough as Wichita State went on to win, 68-48.
The Shockers will travel to Normal, Ill. Wednesday, Jan. 22 to play Illinois State. The game is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m. and will be shown on Cox Kansas 22.
