Box Score

Wichita, Kan. – Cale Elam pitched seven complete innings and Johnny Coy drove in two runs as the Shockers took game one of the three game series with the Indiana State Sycamores, 4-1. Elam struck out six Sycamore batters and gave up three hits while Coy went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI to lead the Shocker offense. Albert Minnis earned the save as he pitched the last two innings, striking out three and allowing only one hit.

The Shockers (17-14) started the scoring in the third inning behind a two RBI single from Coy that scored Cody Bobbit and Casey Gillaspie. Bobbit doubled to deep right field and Gillaspie walked before being driven in by Coy.

Indiana State (12-12) threatened to score in the fourth inning. A throwing error and a walk by Koby Kraemer had the Sycamores with runners on first and third with only one out. But the Shockers caught Cody Zimmerman in a rundown between third base and home plate and the Shockers escaped the Sycamore threat and owned a 2-0 lead after four innings.

In the sixth inning, Roby Ort reached base on a Shocker error and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt from Kraemer. Ort would later score on a passed ball, cutting the Shocker lead to 2-1. The Shockers answered back in the bottom half of the inning with three singles from Garrett Harbutz, Joe Haddox, and Bobbit to load the bases. Back-to-back walks to Garrett Bayliff and Gillaspie scored Harbutz and Haddox to give the Shockers a 4-1 cushion after six innings.

Minnis relieved Elam to start the eighth and ninth innings, collecting three strikeouts and earned his first save of the season.

The Shockers will continue their three game series with the Sycamores tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
