WICHITA, Kan. – Brianne Bond's sixth inning go-ahead grand slam was the difference in Wichita State's come from behind series clinching 8-4 victory Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Stadium.
On a day where the Shockers honored seniors Katie Armagost, Danika Miller, and Hayley Temple the Bulldogs had early intentions of spoiling the occasion. Nicole Randel hit a three-run home run in the top of the first off of Armagost with the wind blowing out to left center.
Temple, playing her final game in Wilkins Stadium responded with a two-out three-run shot of her own in the bottom of the inning to even the score, 3-3.
Randel put Drake back ahead with a RBI single to right field on a line drive that tipped off of first baseman Abby Furstenberg's glove allowing Amy Pierce to score in the top of the fourth inning.
The Shockers answered right away in the bottom of the inning when Melanie Jaegers hit her fourth home run of the week to tie the game. The Shockers continued to battle in the fifth getting a walk from Temple followed by Furstenberg reaching on a fielding error and Ali Vandever earning a 13-pitch walk to load the bases for Bond. The sophomore then recorded the biggest hit of her young career connecting on a 3-2 pitch and taking it out to left field for what would turn out to be the game-winning hit.
Armagost buckled down allowing only four hits over the games final six innings to earn the victory.
Bond finished the day 1-for-2 with all four RBIs coming on the sixth inning grand slam. Temple finished 1-for-1 with three RBI, two walks and two runs scored.
Wichita State will look to carry the momentum gained from Sunday's victory into Tuesday's 6 p.m. series finale at Missouri State.
