Harbutz drove in three runs and A.J. Ladwig carried a no-hitter into the sixth
inning to help the Shockers defeat Oral Roberts by a score of 8-1.
The win improved the Shockers record to 6-4 in 2013. Wichita
State finished with 12 hits and one error.
Ladwig pitched 6.2 innings allowing just one run on two
hits. He struck out four batters and
issued just one walk. With the win,
Ladwig improved to 2-1 on the season.
Phillip Wilson suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles (5-6).
He allowed four runs (one earned) in two-thirds of an inning to fall to 0-1 on
the season.
Ladwig retired the side in order in the first inning with a
pair of groundouts and a strikeout. The sophomore retired the first eight batters
he faced.
The Shockers scored the games first run in the third. Dayne
Parker singled to lead off the inning. Casey Gillaspie drove in Parker on a
grounder to third that resulted in an error.
Later in the inning, Garrett Bayliff scored on a Johnny Coy
sacrifice fly. Bayliff reached base on an infield single.
With two on and two out, Erik Harbutz slugged a double off
the right field wall to knock in Gillaspie and Tyler Baker. The Shockers led
4-0 after three.
Following a third inning walk, Ladwig responded by retiring
the next seven batters he faced. Logan Domenico broke up the no-hitter with a single
to right in the sixth inning.
Oral Roberts threatened in the sixth with runners at the
corners, but Ladwig responded by getting back-to-back popouts to Parker to
escape the inning with the shutout intact.
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the seventh inning.
Matt Brandy doubled to lead off the inning. He came home on a Chris Williams
RBI groundout.
WSU added some insurance in the seventh. Bayliff began the
inning with a single. Tyler Baker picked up his eighth RBI of the season when
he chased home Bayliff with a single of his own.
Two batters later, Harbutz plated Gillaspie with a base
knock. Harbutz finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Baker came around to score on a Micah Green single. A three-run
seventh gave the Shockers a 7-1 lead.
In the eighth inning, the Shockers tacked on another run.
Cody Bobbit walked and later scored on the third error of the game by Oral
Roberts.
Aaron LaBrie pitched 2.1 innings of hitless baseball to
close out the Golden Eagles, who finished with one run on just two hits. They
made three errors in the game.
Wichita State has now won six of its last seven games. The
Shockers will host the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks tomorrow, Wed. March 6. The
game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
