WICHITA, Kan. -
Wichita State was swept in a weather-delayed doubleheader against No. 22
Nebraska Saturday at Wilkins Stadium by scores of 3-1 and 9-0.
Following a three and a half hour delay due to rain and
lightning, Nebraska opened the day with Taylor Edwards' two-out solo home run
in the top of the first inning off Shocker starter Katie Armagost giving the
Cornhuskers a 1-0 advantage.
That was one of the few mistakes Armagost would make
throughout the game. The Wichita State senior held the Huskers to only two hits
over the next five innings maintaining crisp control of her pitches and
effectively changing speeds to keep the power hitting Big Ten Huskers
off-balance.
Armagost was matched inning for inning by Nebraska starter Emily
Lockman until Melanie Jaegers reach base in the bottom of the sixth inning on a
two-out single to left field. Ali Vandever followed with a line drive double to
the right centerfield wall that scored Jaegers all the way from first and tied
the game, 1-1.
Having seemingly flipped the momentum in its favor heading
into the seventh inning, Wichita State caught a bit of bad luck that could have
further reaching implications. After the first two batters of the inning were
retired in order Nebraska's leadoff hitter Kiki Stokes laced a ball into the
gap in left field for what appeared to be a triple. However, the ball deadened
in the wet grass forcing centerfielder Layne Greenlee to adjust her route to
the ball. In the process the sophomore twisted a knee and was unable to make it
to the ball allowing Stokes to slide in ahead of a late relay throw for an
inside the park home run.
Edwards followed two batters later with her second RBI of
the game on a single to left to put the Huskers up 3-1. She finished the game
2-for-4 with two RBI's.
Lockman threw a perfect seventh inning to end the game
improving her record to 7-1.
Nebraska's late momentum carried itself into the second game
of the doubleheader as the Huskers scored a pair of runs each in the third and
fourth inning before exploding for five runs in the fifth to close out the game
9-0.
The Huskers got solo home runs from Alicia Armstrong, Dawna Tyson,
and Edwards and were shut down by Edward's twin sister Tatum in the pitchers
circle.
The Shockers only hit came on Vandever's first inning double
down the left field line.
Wichita State is next in action when they host UMKC on Wed.,
Mar. 13 for a midweek doubleheader. Games begin at 5 p.m.
