State's Alexis Jenkins' desperation contested jumper with time expiring gave Illinois
State a 57-56 win over Wichita State Thursday night at Redbird Arena.
Wichita State's Chynna Turner delivered in a tip-in off a
miss with eight seconds left to put WSU on top 56-55 before Jenkins' game
winner. Illinois State closed the game
on a 28-15 run.
The Shockers raced to a 12-point lead early in the second
half, thanks to an 11-0 run sparked by a Michaela Dapprich three. Another Dapprich basket put the Shockers on
top 50-44 with 4:16 left. Illinois State
again fought back and took their first lead of the second half, 55-54, after
Brianna Puni hit both ends of a one-and-one with 34 seconds left.
Alex Harden led the Shockers with 17 points. Jazimen Gordon added 10 rebounds. Jessica Diamond contributed nine points and
eight boards. Janae Smith led Illinois
State with 17 while Candace Sykes added a double-double of 12 points and 10
rebounds.
The first half saw 12 lead changes and two ties as neither
team could muster more than a four-point lead.
The Shockers used a 9-4 run midway through the half to take a 16-15 lead
then extended to 24-21 at the break.
Harden delivered nine of her points by the break while Janae Smith led
the Redbirds with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting.
The Shockers return to the road Sunday afternoon to face
fourth-place Indiana State. Tipoff is
scheduled for 12:30 inside the Hulman Center and will be broadcast on the FOX
Sports family of networks as part of the Missouri Valley Conference's "Wild
Card Weekend" television package.
