WBB: Shocks Defeat Salukis on Senior Night, 80-55

WICHITA, Kan.- Senior Darice Fountaine scored a career-high 17 points to help the Wichita State women's basketball team defeated Southern Illinois 80-55 Saturday night at Charles Koch Arena on senior night.  

Fountaine shot 5-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range to lead the Shockers in scoring. Jazimen Gordon and Alex Harden scored 10 points each.

Wichita State (19-8, 13-2) opened the game on a 9-0 run, and Michelle Price scored the last four points of the run on back-to-back layups that put the Shocker women up 9-2 over Southern Illinois (4-21, 1-13) at the 16:01 mark.

With 11:13 remaining in the half, Jessica Diamond's long 2-pointer from the left corner put the Shockers up 16-9. Then, two minutes later, a layup by Chynna Turner and 3-pointer from Darice Fountaine stretched the Shocker lead to 21-12.

Turner helped the Shockers break the game open by starting a 9-1 run on a baseline jumper to put her team up 10, 27-17. The run was capped by Michaela Dapprich's 3-pointer at the 4:02 mark to stretch the Wichita State lead to 34-18.

Wichita State closed the half on a 6-0 run that was capped by a Jasmine Jones steal and layup with 59 seconds remaining. The Shockers went into the half up 42-23 and shot 17-for-30 (.567) from the field.

The Shockers started the second half just like they finished the first, going on a 10-0 run at the beginning of half to go up 54-27.

Fountaine's 3-pointer at the 10:23 mark put Wichita State up 30, 66-36.

Late in the half, Alex Harden stopped an 8-0 run by Southern Illinois with a drive to the basket to put the lead at 76-50.

Having the second largest scoring output of the season, Wichita State shot 32-for-58 (.552) for the game, including 5-for-12 (.417) from behind the arc.

The Shocker women will travel to Normal, Ill. on Thursday, February 28 for a game against Illinois State. Tip is set for 7:35 p.m.
