Box Score WICHITA,
Kan.- The Pittsburgh Panthers scored six runs in the first inning and three
runs in the eighth and beat the Shockers 11-3 on Sunday afternoon at Eck
Stadium.
Rhys
Aldenhoven earned the win for the Panthers (3-0), pitching 6.1 innings and
allowed two runs on four hits while striking out three Shockers batters. Eric
Hess led the Panthers offensively, going 2-for-4 with four RBI.
Garrett
Bayliff led the Shockers (0-3) offensively, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Tobin
Mateychick was credited with the loss after giving up six earned runs in the
first inning.
Drew
Palmer came in relief for Mateychick in the first inning and pitched five
innings, allowing one run on six hits with three strikeouts before getting
relieved in the sixth inning.
Pittsburgh
put up six runs in first inning behind a grand slam home run by Eric Hess
causing the Shockers to go to the bullpen. The Panthers took advantage of three walks and
a hit batsman to take the early lead.
A
solo home run by Casey Roche in the top of the second inning increased the
Panthers lead to 7-0.
The
score remained 7-0 until the top half of the sixth inning when the Panthers
capitalized on three Shocker errors that expanded the Panthers lead to 8-0
after six innings.
The
Shockers did get on the scoreboard in the seventh inning after a two RBI
single from junior Garrett Bayliff that scored Casey Gillaspie and Johnny Coy
to cut the deficit to 8-2.
In
the eighth inning, the Panthers scored three runs on four hits, including a RBI
triple from Sam Parente.
Wichita State did score a lone run after a throwing error committed by
Pittsburgh allowed Erik Harbutz to score.
The
Shockers will next be in action on the road on Feb. 19 when they travel to
Tulsa, Okla. to take on Oral Roberts. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
