Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- The
Wichita State baseball team dropped game two of its season opening series with
the Pittsburgh Panthers by a score of 10-8.
Tanner Dearman went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Tyler Baker
went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a home run.
Starter A.J. Ladwig took the loss as he pitched 4.1 innings
and gave up four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.
In the third frame, Pitt's Casey Roche launched a home run
to deep left field that drove in Boo Vazquez. The long ball gave the Panthers a
2-0 lead.
The Shockers fought back in the fourth inning. With one out,
Casey Gillaspie singled up the middle. Johnny Coy tripled to left field to
bring home Gillaspie and cut the lead to one.
Coy scored on a single by Erik Harbutz that tied the game at two. Harbutz
finished the day with two hits and a run scored.
The Panthers reclaimed the lead in the fifth with two runs
to chase Ladwig and take a 4-2 lead.
Pitt scored three more runs in the sixth and two in the seventh for a
9-2 lead.
Dayne Parker cut into the Pitt lead in the bottom of the
seventh. The Shockers' shortstop chased home Micah Green with a two out single
to make it a 9-3 game.
Wichita State added another run when Tanner Dearman knocked
in his first run as a Shocker, plating Parker with a two-out single. The
Shockers trailed 9-4 after seven innings.
In the eighth inning, Brandon Peterson struck out all three
batters he faced in his first inning on the mound as a Shocker. He finished his
debut with four strikeouts and allowed one run in two innings.
The Shockers continued to rally in the eighth. With two on
and two outs, Tyler Baker clobbered a home run over the right field wall.
Baker's bomb trimmed the Pitt lead to 9-7 after eight frames.
In the top of the ninth Pitt picked up another run, when
Roche drove in his third run of the day with a bases load fielder's choice.
Bennette Hill scored to make it 10-7.
The Shockers continued to fight back in the bottom of the
ninth. Tanner Dearman smacked his third hit of the day with a lead off single.
He later scored on a Panther error.
Tanner Wilt entered the game for Pitt with runners at the
corners and nobody out in the ninth and he got a double play lineout and a
groundout to end the game.
Wichita State concludes its series against Pitt on Sunday at
Eck Stadium. The game will start at 1 p.m.
