Box Score LAWRENCE, Kan.- The Wichita State women's volleyball team fell to the University of Kansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament 3-1 on Friday night inside Allen Fieldhouse. The Shockers lost by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-22.
Ashley Andrade had 16 kills for Wichita State, while Sam Sanders and Elizabeth Field added 13 and 11, respectively. Chelsey Feekin had 44 assists and Alyssa Carney added 13 digs.
The Jayhawks jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the early going, but the Shockers hung around and back-to-back kills by Ashley Andrade cut the lead to 10-7. Kansas then rattled off four consecutive points to put its lead at 14-7 and force a Wichita State timeout. Out of the timeout, the Shockers answered with a 7-0 run to tie the score at 14. During the run Elizabeth Field had two kills, while Ashlyn Driskill and Chelsey Feekin each added a kill. The run was capped with a block from Feekin and Field. Later in the set, another kill by Field gave the Shockers their first lead of the set 16-15. The two sides traded points for the rest of the way and the Jayhawks went on to win the first set 25-23.
A service ace by Gabby Urban early in the second set gave Wichita State a 4-3 advantage, but the Jayhawks scored five straight points, including back-to-back service aces to take a 8-4 lead and force a Shocker timeout. Kansas eventually went up 13-6 before an Andrade kill capped a 4-0 run for Wichita State and put the Jayhawk lead at 13-10. The Shockers continued to slice into the lead with a kill by Sam Sanders that put the score at 17-15, but Kansas would not concede and won the set, 25-19.
A block by Field and Feekin gave Wichita State a one-point lead, 5-4, in the third set, and later, a kill by Field stretched the lead to 7-5. The Jayhawks got back into the set and took a 14-12 lead, before the Shockers scored four consecutive points to take back the lead, 16-14, on another kill by Field. Andrade landed another kill to put Wichita State up 21-17 and a kill by Katie Reilly put the score at 23-17 to force a Kansas timeout. A kill by Sanders won the set for the Shockers, 25-20.
Back-to-back kills by Sanders put the Shockers up 4-3 in the fourth set, and a block from Feekin later in the set stretched the lead to 10-7. Wichita State kept their lead with a kill by Reilly to make the score 15-12 into the media timeout. The Jayhawks then scored the next three points out of the media timeout to tie the score at 15 and force a Shocker timeout. Kansas went on to take an 18-16 lead, but an error on the Jayhawks and a block by Driskill tied the score at 18. Then, with the score knotted up at 19, Kansas scored four straight points to take a 23-19 lead. Down set point, 24-20, Wichita State scored two points to force a Jayhawk timeout but Kansas went on to win the set 25-22 and capture the match.
The Shockers ended the season with a record of 28-7.
