Box Score WICHITA, Kan.- MVC Tournament MVP Ashley Andrade and Katie Reilly each had eight kills while All-Tournament selection Chelsey Feekin collected 28 assists as Wichita State swept Southern Illinois to earn the 2013 MVC tournament championship.
Along with Andrade and Feekin, Sam Sanders earned All-Tournament team honors with a total of 17 kills in the Shockers two tournament games.
The Shockers went down 7-2 to begin the first set, but would not go away and a service ace by Dani Mostrom tied the score at 11. Wichita State then took its first lead of the set, 13-12, on a block by Elizabeth Field and Sam Sanders. Another block by Ashley Andrade and a bad set by Southern Illinois stretched the Wichita State lead to 18-16 and forced a Saluki timeout. A service ace by Chelsey Feekin put Wichita State up 23-18 and the Shockers went on to win the first set, 25-20.
A block by Andrade capped a run of four consecutive points to begin the second set for the Shockers and Katie Reilly's kill stretched the lead to 7-2 later in the set. Southern Illinois eventually cut the Wichita State lead to 14-12, but five straight points by the Shockers put their lead at 19-12. The Salukis answered with five consecutive points of their own, but Wichita State then scored the last six points of the set, capped by a kill from Ashlyn Driskill to win the set, 25-17.
Field blocked an attack by Southern Illinois to give Wichita State a 5-4 lead in the third set and another kill by Feekin stretched the lead to 9-6. The Salukis then rattled off six consecutive points to take a 12-9 lead before the Shockers tied the third set at 15-15 to force a Southern Illinois timeout. Wichita State scored six of the next eight points that was highlighted by three Reilly kills and gave the Shockers a 21-17 advantage. Field would win the set for the Shockers with her seventh kill of the match as Wichita State took home the MVC Championship trophy.
Wichita State earned a berth in the 2013 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament and will know their matchup tomorrow night, as the selection show will air on ESPNU at 8:30 p.m. CT.
