WICHITA, Kan. - The
Wichita State baseball program will host its annual First Pitch Banquet on Mon.,
Jan. 28 in the Preferred Health Systems Multipurpose Center at Charles Koch
Arena. Kansas City Royals manager Ned
Yost will be the featured speaker at the banquet. The reception will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner
will start at 7 p.m.
Also scheduled to appear at the banquet are former Shockers
Andy Dirks and Mike Pelfrey. Dirks
played in the 2012 World Series for the Detroit Tigers and Pelfrey is a pitcher
for the Minnesota Twins.
Yost has been a part of Major League Baseball for 33 years,
beginning as a player for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1980. He was drafted in the second round in 1974 by
Montreal out of junior college, but didn't sign until later that year as a
first rounder by the New York Mets. He
was a part of the 1982 World Series team alongside sluggers Paul Molitor, Robin
Yount and Cecil Cooper. Ned also played
with the Texas Rangers and Montreal Expos, mostly as a catcher.
Ned has spent most of the last 18 years coaching and managing,
with stops in Atlanta and Milwaukee before being named skipper for the Royals
in 2010. Ned spent 12 years in Atlanta
as a bullpen coach and third base coach, followed by six seasons as manager for
the Brewers from 2003-08.
