Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa - The Wichita State men's basketball team
shot 12-of-25 (.480) from behind the three-point line to defeat Drake, 75-63, on
Wednesday night at the Knapp Center.
Nick Wiggins scored a season high 18 points to lead Wichita
State in scoring. Senior Malcolm Armstead scored 14 and dished out
four assists, while Cleanthony Early added 11 points. The trio went a
combined 11-of-14 (.786) from behind the arc.
Micah Mason led the Bulldogs with 14 points, two
assists and two steals.
The Shockers (13-1, 2-0) opened the game with a 13-4 run, capped
by a Demetric Williams three point play, to force a Drake (6-7, 0-2) timeout at the 16:20
mark. Wichita State forced four Drake turnovers during the opening four minutes.
A Nick Wiggins dunk put the Shockers up 21-9 with 11:21
remaining in the half.
The Bulldogs would not go away however, going on a 12-0 run
that was ended by a long 3-pointer off the backboard from Micah Mason that
tied the game at 21. Wiggins then fueled the Shockers by hitting three straight
3-pointers of his own to put the Shockers up by nine, 30-21, with 5:06 left
in the half.
The game would go back-and-forth for the rest of the half as
Mason hit another 3-point shot for Drake with :49 remaining to bring his
team within two, 34-32, at the break.
Wichita State shot 13-of-31 in the half, including 6-of-15
from long distance. Nick Wiggins shot 4-of-5 from behind the arc and led the Shockers
with 14 points in the half. Demetric Williams added six points and four
assists.
Cleanthony Early scored the first six points of the second
half for the Shockers on two 3-pointers that stretched the Shocker lead to
40-34 at the 17:16 mark.
A steal and layup by Tekele Cotton with 13:43 remaining put
Wichita State up, 45-35.
After the Shockers had gone up by as many as 17, Drake
pulled back to within 10 before back-to-back 3-pointers by Fred VanVleet
and Malcolm Armstead put Wichita State back up, 67-51, with 4:17 remaining in
the game.
Drake went on a 10-2 run to cut the Shocker lead to eight
with 1:01 remaining in the game, but the Shockers were able to put the game
away with a Tekele Cotton fast break layup and hit 4-of-5 free throws over the
final minute.
Wichita State shot 28-of-60 (.467) for the game and forced 19
Bulldog turnovers. The Shockers also had 13 steals in the contest.
The Shockers will head to Peoria,
Ill. for their next game against Bradley on Sunday, Jan. 6. The game can be
seen on ESPNU and is set to tip at 4:30 p.m.
