WICHITA, Kan.- Alex Harden and Jasmine Jones both recorded
career highs in points, scoring 20 and 16 respectively, to lead the Shockers
past Creighton, 67-45, on Saturday night at Charles Koch Arena.
Jones also recorded four assists, while Michelle Price
contributed a career high six steals in the Shocker effort.
Sarah Nelson led the Bluejays, scoring 17 points and
grabbing seven rebounds. Ally Nelson added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Creighton (12-4, 4-1) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead,
forcing head coach Jody Adams to take a timeout at the 18:15 mark in the first
half.
After a Creighton 3-point basket, Chynna Turner got Wichita
State (10-6, 4-0) on the board with a layup that cut the Bluejay lead to 11-2.
Then, after each team traded baskets, the Shockers went on a 15-1 run to take
the lead, 19-14 with 4:50 left in the half. During the run, Michelle Price
scored seven points and Alex Harden had six.
Creighton went on a 7-0 run of their own that was capped by
a Sarah Nelson jumper that put her team up, 21-19.
Two free-throws and a layup by Harden fueled a 9-3 Shocker
run to close out the half and put Wichita State up, 28-24. She led Wichita
State in the half with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists. Price added
seven points and five rebounds to the first half effort. As a team, the
Shockers shot 12-of-26 (.462) in the half.
A free-throw by Price and a layup by Chynna Turner opened
the scoring in the second half for the Shockers, as they went up 31-24.
Wichita State continued their hot shooting, making
three-straight 2-point baskets to push the lead to 43-32 with 9:44 remaining in
the game.
With 5:32 remaining, Jasmine Jones stole the ball, the
nailed a jumper on the offensive end to put Wichita State up, 51-39, and put
the game away. The lead never go below ten the rest of the way. Jones scored
all 16 of her points in the second half.
Wichita State shot 27-of-52 (.519) for the game,
out-rebounded Creighton, 36-28, and forced 22 turnovers.
The Shocker women are next in action on Monday, Jan. 21st at 7:05 p.m. inside Charles Koch Arena against Drake.
