Box Score DALLAS, Texas - Wichita State used 13 kills from Sam Sanders
to take a 3-1 win over Auburn in the SMU Doubletree Classic. The Shockers (5-3) won by scores of 15-25, 25-22,
25-16 and 25-17.
Sanders hit .522 in the match for the Shockers and Emily
Adney had 11 kills. Chelsey Feekin had eight kills, 34 assists and 13 digs, while Jackie Church had 13 digs.
Auburn jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set and
increased it to 15-9 with a kill. A kill
and service ace by Sam Sanders and an AU hitting error pulled the Shocks to
within 15-12, but the Tigers answered with a 4-0 run to take a 19-12 lead. AU went on to win the set 25-15.
The second set went back-and-forth early until a kill by
Elizabeth Field, a block by Sanders and Ashley Andrade and a service ace by
Chelsey Feekin put WSU in front 17-14.
The Tigers answered with a 3-0 run to pull within 18-17 and tied it at
21 with back-to-back kills. With the
score tied at 22, WSU closed out the set with a kill by Feekin, a service ace by
Katie Reilly and a kill by Field to win 25-22.
A kill by Field and a block by Adney and Andrade gave WSU an
11-8 lead in the third set. AU pulled to
within 14-13 with a block, but WSU reeled off five-straight points to take a 19-13
lead. The Shocks scored five of the last
six points to take a 25-16 win.
WSU took control early in the fourth set. Back-to-back kills from Andrade gave WSU a
5-1 lead and after a block by Andrade and Adney and an AU hitting error, the
Shocks grabbed an 8-2 lead. A kill by
Sanders increased the lead to 17-8, but the Tigers scored three-straight to cut
the lead to 17-11. A kill by Adney gave
WSU a 19-12 lead and WSU won the set 25-17.
The Shockers close out the tournament against Texas State at
11 a.m. on Sat., Sept. 8.
