Box Score WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita State swept Evansville, 3-0, in the Missouri Valley Conference
home opener for the Shockers Friday night at Charles Koch Arena by scores of
25-16, 25-16, and 25-17.
Freshman Ashlyn Driskill and
junior Emily Adney had 15 and nine kills, respectively to lead Wichita State
(8-4, 2-1). Junior Chelsey Feekin added 33 assists, nine digs and six kills.
In the first set the
Shockers jumped out to an early 8-4 lead with three kills from Adney.
Evansville (5-10, 1-2) closed to within 8-6 before Wichita State reeled of six
consecutive points to extend their lead to 14-6. Evansville never closed the
Shocker advantage closer than 20-14. The Shockers closed out the set winning
six of the final eight points including one of Driskill's six first set kills
for the final point. Wichita State out hit the Purple Aces .314-.030 in the
set.
The two teams went
back-and-forth to open the second set with neither team grabbing more than a
one point lead until a kill by junior Sam Sanders gave Wichita State a 10-8
advantage. Consecutive kills by Driskill extended the Shocker lead to 18-12.
Wichita State again took control of the latter part of the set winning seven of
the final ten points. Driskill, Sanders and senior Elizabeth Field each tallied
four kills in the set for Wichita State.
Wichita State dug out of an
early 4-1 deficit to open the third set tying the score at 5-5 with a kill from
Adney. The Shockers then won eight of the next ten points to take a 13-7 lead
getting kills from six different players. Evansville closed the gap to 19-15 on
a block by junior Rachel TenHoor. Following a timeout by Wichita State head
coach Chris Lamb the Shockers cruised to victory getting a kill from Sanders to
close out the match.
Ashley Ring's nine kills led
Evansville.
The Shockers are in action
next Sat., Sept. 22 against Southern Illinois at 7 p.m. inside Charles Koch
Arena.
