Box Score DeKALB, Ill. - Wichita State dropped its season opener to
New Mexico State, 3-1. The Aggies won by
scores of 28-30, 25-16, 25-20 and 26-24.
Ashley Andrade led the Shockers with 12 kills and hit .450,
while Katie Reilly had 10 kills and hit .310 in her Shocker debut. Elizabeth Field had 10 kills and hit .412 and
Chelsey Feekin had nine kills, 47 assists, two service aces and seven
digs. Jackie Church led the Shockers
with 15 digs.
Emily Adney and Ashley Andrade started the first set with
back-to-back kills. New Mexico State
used two-straight points to tie the score at 10 and the two teams continued to
trade points. A 4-0 run by the Aggies
put them in front 19-16, but the Shockers tied it up at 19 on a block by
Andrade and Katie Reilly. An Andrade
kill put the Shocks up 22-20 and a kill by Elizabeth Field brought the Shockers
to set point at 24-22, but NMSU came back to tie it at 24. The Shockers won the set 30-28 on a kill by
Adney.
The beginning of the second set went back-and-forth, but the
Aggies grabbed an 11-7 lead with a kill.
NMSU ran away with the second set winning 25-16.
A Reilly kill gave the Shocks an early 7-5 lead in the third
set. NMSU came back to tie it at 10 and
the two teams went back-and-forth until the Aggies took a 22-19 lead on a
kill. NMSU scored three of the final
four points of the set to win 25-20.
The Shockers took control of the fourth set with
back-to-back service aces from Adney for an 18-12 lead. A kill by Sam Sanders gave WSU a 20-14 lead,
but the Aggies stormed back to tie the set at 20. WSU answered with a 3-0 run, but NMSU then
scored three-straight for a 23-23 tie.
The Aggies scored three of the final four points for the 26-24 win.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., August 25 at 2 p.m.
against Northern Illinois.
